The present owner is a keen Fly Fisherman who has enjoyed some 20 years of fishing Lough Sheelin from Conleen House. There is nothing nicer than being able to walk 150 yards to your boat and be on the water in a few minutes at any time of any day.
Lough Sheelin is a natural limestone Lake of some 4000 acres; rich in nutrients and minerals it provides a wealth of natural food for trout. Coupled with prolific fly hatches throughout the long season, this results in some of the largest Brown Trout caught anywhere. Fish of 3lb and 4lb are not considered that special on Sheelin. Specimens of 6lbs and over are caught every year with last year's best being 10lbs plus!
The season opens around March 17th and is fly only. After April 1st trolling under oars is also permitted. There are fly hatches right through the season, which ends around October 12th. In recent years the Mayfly hatch on Lough Sheelin has been truly spectacular. In 2009 anglers on the lake in the last weeks of May and early June witnessed phenomenal falls of spent gnat. On some evenings it was literally snowing Mayfly and the lake was carpeted with them. Local anglers who have fished Lough Sheelin all their lives swore that last year's Mayfly hatch was the finest they had seen in 40 years.
This is not to say the fishing is easy. It can be challenging, more so than a stocked commercial Fishery. But these are natural Wild Brown Trout and hooking one is only the beginning!
Conleen House has a fully equipped tackle room, rods, reels, nets, lines, flies, boats, outboard motors and oars. All will be available to a new owner should he or she wish to retain them.
